Transforming Trauma:

Safety, Growth and Regeneration

Workshop with Ingrid Cryns

Saturday May 5  9:30 am – 9:00 pm (Registration starts at 9 am)

Sunday May 6  9:30 am – 4:30 pm

Trauma is a response in our body-mind system to when one feels threatened. Transforming trauma is about the need to develop a more resilient self that can adapt more flexibly to unexpected changes from a deeper place of embodied and grounded stability. Through understanding how to truly feel safe in the body, we can grow out of survival modes of living back into thriving through learning how to regenerate and reorganize our body mind connections. This workshop will teach you how to thrive joyfully and transform your trauma responses of stress, anxiety or despair within, into holding more equanimity, peace and joy.

  • Do you find yourself constantly thinking thoughts about the future? Worrying ‘what if’s? Or going over and over what happened in the past?
  • Are you struggling with holding focus, foggy brained, constantly and easily distracted?
  • Do you feel alone, isolated, hopeless, depressed or in despair?
  • Do you feel a constant hyper-vigilance, or are highly sensitive to sounds?
  • Have you had a car or sports accident, or hospitalization experience that has caused some sort of lingering trauma/high anxiety symptoms?
  • Do you find yourself not feeling very grounded? Feel accident prone, often stumbling or tripping over things?
  • Do you have an early childhood history of abuse, conflict, disrupted, abandoned,  rejecting or highly critical form of parenting? Early relational or developmental trauma?

Our bodies have an orienting reflex that allows us to look around and take in what is around us at the time of a threatening event.  We can then respond instinctively to either run away or fight the threat.  If neither option is possible, for instance when one is physically smaller, as in a child with an abusive parent (early relational or developmental trauma), or if one is trapped immobile, such as in a car (shock trauma), then a freezing response occurs.  Within this freezing response one can either simply go numb, not feel anything physically and still be able to observe and take in what is around you somewhat, or else one can dissociate and leave the body with no conscious memory of the event.  This is a basic instinctual survival mechanism that can be traced back to how animals coped with the shock of being attacked by a predator.  Leaving the body is a protective mechanism to not feel any pain in the body.

Identifying and understanding the range of physical symptoms that trauma creates, allows one to begin to learn how to listen to the body and connect the physical symptoms to the emotional triggers.  Learning how to link body awareness with mental awareness allows one to begin to heal the trauma.  The symptoms of trauma can be stable (ever-present) or unstable (come and go), or they can remain hidden for decades.  Quite often, symptoms can appear in clusters and grow increasingly complex over time, which can make it very difficult to trace the symptoms to the original trauma.  Our bodies hold this information even if our minds cannot remember.

For those people who are traumatized and haven’t been able to orient themselves out of it, they become stuck in survival mode.  Their system is overwhelmed by the threat. It’s like driving a car with one foot on the accelerator and the other one on the brake at the same time.  The body is constantly experiencing some kind of trigger that is unconscious to the mind, gets overwhelmed and then ‘shuts down’ in some form. This is now understood as directly linked to the polyvagal nervous system that is connected at the base of our neck, wrapping around, down, into the front of the heart and inner organs. We will spend time in understanding how the profound relationships between the physiological response in the body from trauma are deeply linked to the neural pathways of the brain.

Understanding how the polyvagal theory allows the shame of not being able to control the variety of symptoms of trauma to become simple, non-judgmental acceptance and compassion for one’s self.  It also becomes a clear focus in how to heal and address the core issue of an inability to feel safe and to be able to come back into the body. You will learn a variety of methods that you can do by yourself or with others that will calm down regulate the nervous system. Over time, you will be able to grow, reclaim and reorganize your body mind neural connections so that it is continuously regenerating into a thriving and healthier system.

    • Understand what trauma or PTSD does in the body: the variety of body symptoms, and similarities to Autism, ADHD, BPD, etc.
  • Learn how understanding the physiology of trauma and the Polyvagal Theory brings HOPE and less shame about not being able to control your emotional dis-regulation symptoms
    • Discover how sounds, tone, the middle ear, facial expression, occipital ridge, neck and shoulder muscles, belly and heart are all profoundly interconnected in trauma
    • Understand how important the social engagement system is in healing trauma
  • Learn about the importance of body felt sense awareness tracking and grounding to reduce anxiety, feel safe and be more present in your life
