Our senses are how we take in and receive the world; through our eyes (sight), our ears (sound), our touch (hands or skin), our smell (nose) and our taste (tongue/mouth).  Our body’s senses are also how we can find clues as to the distinct characteristics of our soul. Our body may be experienced as the medium of a painter’s pallet on the canvas of the soul.  Or, the depth of meaning through a poet’s expression of words can be seen as a window into the soul. The soul speaks in the colourful and poetic language of our body’s multiple senses.

Not only is our body able to teach us information about what we may like or dislike through our senses, it also has a unique quality of combining two or more senses together to cross-reference clues as to what is good or healthy for us or what is something we should be warned about to stay away from.  This can sometimes be understood as a ‘sixth’ sense! That intangible quality that we can’t put our finger on ‘why’ we might not feel comfortable about something. However, our body is giving us that ‘gut’ instinct feeling to protect us from something. Learning how to decode these messages and how to listen to them in ways to empower yourself is what the work of Building SOUL is all about.

Often, poetry will ‘speak’ to our soul. One can have a direct emotional response that our intellect, our reasoning cannot understand right away.  Something in the way the poem has expressed itself will resonate with a quality within our soul that allows something of the essence of our divine soul to shine through.  If you can catch those moments, you have caught a glimpse into the heart of your soul.

Fertile Soul Poem

Poetry is a form of expression for the soul that speaks in several layers of meaning, alluding to something that is unseen.  It creates word pictures, that can be illusive, more symbolic and feeling-based rather than literal.

Whoever finds love

Whoever finds love beneath hurt and grief
disappears into emptiness
with a thousand new disguises
What is the soul
What is the soul I cannot stop asking
if I could taste one sip of an answer
I could break out of this prison for drunks
I didn’t come here of my own accord
and I can’t leave that way
whoever brought me here
will have to take me home

Mystical Art can also seek to capture the mystery of soul and spirit.  Several illusive layers of seeing are often woven into a representation of something that can only be alluded to or subtly suggested.  The phenomenally expressive paintings by Artist, Alex Grey,  is one example of how an ethereal quality of the invisible energies of the body & the imperceptible ‘space’ surrounding it, can be seen through a clairvoyant’s inner eye or ‘soul’ eye.

The soul is often described as immortal; something that exists after death and has an aspect of awareness that continues on, with fragments of memories of many lifetimes of experiences.  A Tulku is an enlightened Buddhist being who is born with all their past life memories intact – a re-incarnated soul.  There are a number of case studies and tests that assert this possibility.  How is it possible to remember something from a completely other lifetime, if who you think you are, your personality and your self identity in this one lifetime, is all that you THINK you are?

Sometimes you meet someone and you think, here is an ‘old soul’.  What does that exactly mean?  Is it a quality of deep knowing in their eyes, or a presence that they emanate?  What is presence? Or is it simply the way they can phrase words, articulate a deeper breadth of meaning with a careful selection of a few words?  These are questions that we will consider throughout this blog as we explore the various layers of meaning when ‘Building SOUL‘.
